We are delighted to invite you to a unique and inspiring event hosted by the ASID Washington Metro Chapter: a Black History Bus Tour on Thursday, February 27, 2025. This exclusive experience is designed to celebrate and honor the rich history and cultural contributions of African Americans while providing a meaningful opportunity for our community of designers to connect and learn together.

Event Details:

  • Date: Thursday, February 27, 2025
  • Time: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
  • Departure Location: Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial (easily accessible by Metro with open parking available on Ohio Street within walking distance of the Memorial)
  • Tour Highlights:
  • King Memorial Completed in 2011, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial serves as a constant reminder of King's hard work, perseverance, and dedication to racial equality.
  • Frederick Douglass National Historic Site Learn more about Cedar Hill, which was Frederick Douglass' home. Inside, catch a glimpse into the heroic life of a national hero. Available only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays - closed all other days.
  • African American Civil War Memorial Over 200,000 African-American soldiers fought in the U.S. Army and Navy during the Civil War. We will stop here to pay our respects and learn about their lives and hardships.
  • U.S. Capitol Building The meeting place for the US Congress and the Legislative branch of the US government. We will learn more about its history - and future - here.
  • Lincoln Memorial was Built to honor the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, this monument was the site of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's famous March on Washington and "I Have a Dream" speech in 1963.
  • The cost is $75 per person (the regular price is $99). Due to expenses, no discounts will be provided for students or members.

Participants are welcome to bring food and drinks on the bus, so feel free to pack a brown bag lunch and get ready to tour history!

This guided tour will offer insights into significant historical landmarks and moments that have shaped the narrative of Black history in our region. It promises to be both educational and inspiring, fostering a deeper appreciation for the diverse stories that influence our shared heritage.
